    Federico FaturosPor:Federico Faturos

Red Bull volvió a dominar.

  • PEREZ WINS AT BAKU WITH LEWIS HAMILTON, MAX VERSTAPPEN OUTSIDE F1 POINTS IN WILD FINISH

PEREZ WINS AT BAKU WITH LEWIS HAMILTON, MAX VERSTAPPEN OUTSIDE F1 POINTS IN WILD FINISH

BAKU – Max Verstappen was cruising toward an easy second consecutive victory until an unexpected tire failure turned the Azerbaijan Grand Prix into a two-lap shootout, a shock victory for teammate Sergio Pérez and one of the more memorable races in recent memory.

The finish Sunday just might have been an unintentional preview of changes Formula One plans to experiment with later this season in an effort to add excitement to the on-track product.

“As long as we keep it consistent, going forward, it certainly helps the fans to be sticking to the TV,” winner Pérez said. “I think they have the most enjoyable two laps of the race, you know?”

The unusual sequence began when championship leader Verstappen crashed out of the lead with four laps remaining, halting what seemed to be a sure march to his third win of the season (amid his rear wing has drawn attention from Mercedes).

F1 threw a red flag, allowed teams to change tires during a lengthy delay, then unconventionally restarted the race.

    From a standing start.

    For two laps.

Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton tried to pass Pérez for the win but accidentally flicked a switch that “basically switches the brakes off and I just went straight” through turn one and off course.

Verstappen and Hamilton both finished outside the top 10, the first time since 2016 that the top two in the championship standings failed to score a point. Verstappen maintained a four-point lead on Hamilton, who could have gained 25 points on his title rival with a victory.

“So sorry, guys,” Hamilton, who had vowed to keep his eyes on the bigger picture of the championship prior to the finish, told the team after his mistake.

That made for an unfamiliar podium as Pérez, Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly all finished in the top three for the first time this year.

Verstappen had no warning his tire was about to fail as he slammed into the wall. The Dutchman climbed from his car, inspected the tire and kicked it in anger before stomping off in disgust over the race-changing failure.

“Sometimes you can hate this sport,” Verstappen said.

A tire failure had ended Lance Stroll’s race earlier and Red Bull, insistent that Pirelli had a safety concern, asked F1 that teams be allowed to change tires before the restart.

F1 had previously announced it would experiment with half-hour sprint races in places of qualifying later this season and then the Baku ending became a preview of an even shorter, more explosive format.

Liberty Media, an American company, is in its fifth season running F1 after buying the commercial rights in 2017. The U.S. ownership has brought a focus on a younger audience on social media and in a deal with Netflix on the popular “Drive to Survive” behind-the-scenes docuseries.

“The Americans took over, so I wasn’t really surprised that we go first with the entertainment,” Gasly said. “I was quite happy. It always brings a bit more excitement. It creates some sort of adrenaline inside you and I knew there will be some opportunities because you start only for two laps.

“Everybody is a bit like lions out of the cage and everybody goes for everything and try to make as many positions as they can in a very short time. It was very intense. I really enjoyed it. If anything, hopefully in the future they’ll do the same.”

Vettel cautioned against F1 adopting too many gimmicks moving forward as the focus turns toward “creating a show.”

“I hope that in the future the races are more exciting,” he said. “But I think we just need to watch out that it doesn’t become too artificial and we don’t lose the roots of the sport.”

Pérez was the leader on the restart but Hamilton shot past him in his attempt to win the race and reclaim the points lead from Verstappen, who took over the top for the first time in his career with his win at Monaco last round.

But when Hamilton accidentally turned his brakes off and slid through the first corner, he snapped a streak of 54 consecutive races of earning a points position finish.

Four-time champion Vettel took second, his highest finish since 2019, to give Aston Martin its first ever F1 podium. Gasly was third for AlphaTauri.

Charles Leclerc started on the pole for Ferrari but couldn’t replicate his qualifying pace and finished fourth. Lando Norris took fifth for McLaren, Fernando Alonso was sixth for Alpine and Gasly’s teammate Yuki Tsunoda took a career-best seventh.

Carlos Sainz was eighth for Ferrari and Daniel Ricciardo was ninth to give McLaren a double points day. Kimi Raikkonen’s 10th place for Alfa Romeo was his first points finish this season.

Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas was never in contention after qualifying 10th and finished 12th after being overtaken by both of the Alfa Romeo cars. Mercedes failed to score a point for the first time since 2018.

Pérez’s second victory in six months tied him with Pedro Rodríguez for the most in F1 by a Mexican driver. In his first season at Red Bull, Perez somewhat salvaged the race for the team that had been headed toward a 1-2 finish before Verstappen’s tire failed.

“I am so, so happy. First of all I have to say I am very sorry for Max because he had a tremendous race,” said Perez, who now has won twice in six months after needing nine years from his 2011 debut until his first victory last November. “We were going to have a 1-2 together, but in the end it was still a fantastic day for us and luckily we were still able to finish the race.”

  • HAMILTON LETS TEARS FLOW AS HE CLINCHES RECORD 7TH F1 TITLE

HAMILTON LETS TEARS FLOW AS HE CLINCHES RECORD 7TH F1 TITLE

    By JEROME PUGMIRE

After winning a difficult race to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of seven Formula One championships on Sunday, the hardest thing for Lewis Hamilton was containing his emotions.

His voice could be heard breaking as he thanked his team over the radio moments after crossing the line at the Turkish Grand Prix, while underneath the helmet the tears were starting to build up.

“All these emotions were running through me and I was trying to stop it,” Hamilton said in his post-race news conference. “I was thinking about my whole career, from when I was five when I drove in a go-kart, from when we won the British championship, driving home with my dad and singing ‘We Are The Champions’ and dreaming of being here.”

Moments after victory No. 94 and title No. 7, he sat in his car with his head in his hands.

“It really hit me and I just burst into tears. I couldn’t get out of the car because I just couldn’t believe it,” Hamilton said. ”I didn’t want the visor to come up and people to see tears flowing, because I had always said I would never let you see me cry. I remember watching drivers in the past crying and I was like ‘I’m not going to do that.’ But it was too much.”

Speaking a short time after his win, Hamilton was wiping away those tears as he prepared to mount the podium.

“I’m definitely a bit lost for words,” he said, thanking his family. “I dreamed of this as a kid. This is way, way beyond our dreams.”

Hamilton only had one title, with McLaren in 2008, when he replaced Schumacher at Mercedes in 2013.

“Dream the impossible. You have got to chase it and never give up,” Hamilton said. “That’s for all the kids out there who dream the impossible. You can do it.”

Hamilton only needed to finish ahead of his teammate Valtteri Bottas to seal his sixth title for Mercedes, and Bottas placed a lowly 14th after making a poor start.

The British driver started from sixth place but still won a fourth straight race and 10th of another hugely dominant season.

“I know I often I say it is beyond wildest dreams but my whole life secretly I have dreamt as high as this,” said Hamilton. “It felt so far-fetched. I remember watching Michael win those world championships. To get one or two or even three is so hard.

“Seven is unimaginable. There is no end to what we can do together, me and this team.”

Hamilton placed about 30 seconds ahead of Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who overtook teammate Charles Leclerc for his first podium of a difficult season.

“It is a bit of a surprise to snatch the podium, but I am certainly very happy,” Vettel said. “It was quite intense but good fun.”

It was also Perez’s first podium of the campaign, while teammate Lance Stroll finished only ninth despite leading from pole position for much of the 58-lap race.

Vettel, a four-time F1 champion, was quick to congratulate his longtime rival, crouching by his cockpit and shaking his hand as he spoke.

Hamilton won his first title with Mercedes in 2014, and every one since except for 2016 when then-teammate Nico Rosberg beat him in an acrimonious battle that saw the teenage karting friends fall out.

“Surely one of the greatest achievements in the history of sports,” Rosberg said on Twitter. “Congratulations Lewis and enjoy the celebrations with your family and friends.”

Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand Tweeted that Hamilton is “the greatest sportsman this country has ever produced.”

Stroll started from pole ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on a resurfaced and skiddy circuit not used in F1 since 2011.

“This was a big test for me,” Hamilton said. “I don’t remember having an ice race before.”

A chaotic start saw Verstappen stall while Hamilton moved up to third only to lose grip and get overtaken by Red Bull’s Alexander Albon and Verstappen. Vettel made a great move from 11th to third, but Bottas spun and dropped right down.

The virtual safety car was activated on Lap 13 after Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi pulled over on the side of the track.

The impatient Verstappen pushed too hard behind second-place Perez and lost control to spin twice on the track. He boxed for new tires again on Lap 19.

Halfway through the race, Stroll and Perez were ahead of Hamilton but losing ground. Stroll came in for new tires on Lap 37 and Hamilton used DRS to get past Perez one lap later and take the lead.

Stroll’s tire change backfired and he was soon passed by both Ferraris, while Bottas spun for the fourth time at the back of the pack.

On a humiliating day for the Finnish driver, he was lapped by Hamilton near the end.

The next step for Hamilton is signing a new contract, and he hinted contract talks will start soon.

“Definitely is something we do need to get onto,” he said. “I wanted to put it aside and wait until the job is done. Probably over the next weeks … But we will get it done, I’m sure.”

Racing Point has announced that Sergio Perez will leave the team at the end of the 2020 Formula 1 season, leaving the door open for Sebastian Vettel to join the team next year.

The confirmation of Perez’s departure from the Silverstone-based team follows lengthy speculation over the Mexican’s future and rumours that Vettel has been in discussions with the team over a deal for next season.

Perez has been with the team based out of Silverstone for the past seven seasons, from back when it was known as Force India but will not be a part of it when it undergoes another change to become Aston Martin Racing next year.

Since 2014, Perez has claimed five podium finishes and achieved a season-best finish of seventh in the drivers’ championship in the 2016 and ’17 seasons, both years in which the team finished best of the rest in fourth place in the constructors’ standings.

“Checo has been part of the Silverstone family for seven years and in that time has become one of the most complete drivers on the grid,” team principal Otmar Szafnauer said in a statement.

“Blisteringly quick on Saturday and Sunday, he’s established his reputation as a tenacious racer and together we have enjoyed some fantastic moments.

“If there was ever a sniff of a podium, Checo was ready to pounce, and those five podiums represent some of the finest days in the history of this team.

“Outside of the car, Checo is a true character and a good friend, and it’s been a pleasure working with him for such a long time.”

“Although we will say goodbye at the end of the year, there are still nine races to go and plenty of opportunities for Checo to make some more special memories with this team.”

Perez had announced last season that he had signed a new three-year contract extension with the team but with Ferrari’s decision to drop Vettel in favour of Carlos Sainz, the team has stopped short of denying a move for the four-time champion as being in the works.

The team is yet to confirm Perez’s replacement yet, though it is widely speculated that four-time champion Vettel will be announced soon as the driver filling the seat for 2021.

SPANISH GP: BOTTAS FASTEST AHEAD OF HAMILTON IN 1ST PRACTIC

MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Valtteri Bottas posted the fastest time in the first practice for the Spanish Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton on Friday.

The Finnish driver was .039 quicker than championship leader Hamilton and about 1 second ahead of Max Verstappen, who leapfrogged Bottas into second place in the standings after winning last Sunday’s race at Silverstone.

There was an encouraging improvement for Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who placed fifth behind his teammate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari changed the chassis on Vettel’s car following a dismal run of form.

Sergio Pérez was seventh for Racing Point after recovering from the coronavirus and testing negative. The virus forced the Mexican to miss the last two races at Silverstone in England after he contracted it last month. Following the Hungarian GP on July 19 he flew by private plane to Mexico, where he visited his mother in hospital after she had an accident.

Mexico has the world’s third-highest total of deaths from COVID-19 — more than 55,000 as of Friday — with only Brazil and the United States recording more.

Pérez defended his decision to fly home.

“I haven’t done anything different to the rest of the paddock. So I was just the unlucky one to get it,” Pérez said. “That’s one thing. But I’m not willing to take any blame for that because anyone can get it.”

Governing body FIA cleared him on Thursday to return to the paddock.

“I’m very happy to be back, to finally be rid of the virus and be back with my team. It’s been tough,” Pérez said. “I couldn’t leave the room, so I was basically on lockdown for 10 days.”

Pérez, who was briefly replaced by veteran German driver Nico Hulkenberg, felt well enough to keep exercising.

“I was actually training in the apartment where I was,” Perez said. “I was extremely lucky not to have any big symptoms other than a little bit of headache, and one or two days I felt very tired.”

No other F1 drivers have tested positive after the first five races of the season.

There is a second practice session later Friday, where conditions are expected to be even warmer on the circuit located just outside Barcelona.

High track temperatures worked against Mercedes last Sunday, with both drivers experiencing tire troubles.

F1 MEXICAN PILOT SERGIO PEREZ TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19

    By Yucatan Times

Racing Point Formula One team driver Sergio Perez will miss the weekend’s British Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19, Formula One said on Thursday.

Perez and some of his Racing Point teammates were self-isolating ahead of the race at Silverstone after the Mexican driver’s initial test came back as inconclusive.

“Following today’s announcement that Sergio Perez of the BWT Racing Point Formula 1 Team produced an inconclusive test result for COVID-19… the FIA and Formula 1 can now confirm that the result of his re-test is positive,” F1 said in a statement.

“Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities.”

A spokesman for Silverstone-based Racing Point said earlier that Perez, who was not at the circuit, had not been back to Mexico since he last raced in Hungary on July 19.

He said a small group of team members who had come into contact with the driver were also self-isolating and being re-tested.

Perez had been due to attend a video news conference with teammate Lance Stroll at the circuit but the Canadian faced questions alone.

Practice for the British Grand Prix, the fourth round of the Formula One season, starts on Friday.

Racing Point shares reserve drivers with engine supplier Mercedes, who have Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne and Mexican Esteban Gutierrez available.

Formula One has started its delayed season without spectators and under carefully controlled conditions, with teams operating in “bubbles” and all employees and those with access to the paddock tested every five days.

The sport had reported only two positive results, neither involving people who attended races, from more than 15,000 tests carried out from June 26 to July 23.
