With just 14 years old, Carlos Santamaría Díaz will be the first student of this age to be admitted to the Anahuac Mayab University, located in Mérida, Yucatán, to study for a bachelor’s degree.

Starting this month, Santamaría Díaz will enter this educational institution to pursue his second degree, this time in Biomedical Engineering.

The «genius» child takes on this new challenge as part of his academic life, his curiosity and his self-taught profile that has led him to challenge himself. Although, as he himself admits, «the biggest challenge is adapting to the dynamics in the school classroom».

Despite the fact that this semester he will take it online, due to the contingency due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Carlos and his family plan to change their residence to Merida in the coming months, as long as the epidemiological traffic light permits.

«I love the world of cells, exploring and discovering how it works,» said Carlos, when asked about his choice for this race; «the first thing I will do when I arrive in Yucatan will be to go to the beach and sail,» he said.

Carlos, who also lived for a time in Spain, has an outstanding academic record, since at the age of 9 he completed a Diploma in Analytical Chemistry at the UNAM Chemistry Faculty and at 10 he completed another Diploma in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, in addition to a Undergraduate course that was from Higher Algebra.

When he was 10 years old, he studied the first semester of Genomic Sciences at the Center for Genomic Sciences of the UNAM Cuernavaca; That same year, he accredited primary and secondary education at the INEA of the SEP.

He studied online high school to be able to apply on time at UNAM and, with that, become the first 11-year-old boy to be admitted to the Bachelor of Biomedical Physics. He has taken two courses at the UNAM Materials Institute, one in Electron Microscopy and the other in Superconductors.

«At Anahuac Mayab University we are excited to have a student like Carlos, who has placed his trust in our institution.»

«I consider it a great commitment, but also a great opportunity, to be able to contribute to their training, just as we do with all the students who are part of our university community,» said Juan Antonio Anaya, coordinator of Biomedical Engineering at this center. of studies.

The Biomedical Engineering degree has been taught at the Anahuac Mayab since 2018. The third generation will be made up of 30 young people who are new entrants, including Carlos Santamaría.

In total, there will be more than 1,300 new students who, from August 10, start their university life to study any of the 30 undergraduate programs offered by the Anahuac Mayab University.
