President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that his government is working to create three Natural Protected Areas in the Yucatan Peninsula and in Campeche, in addition to the fact that he raised the idea of creating another one on the border between Chiapas and Oaxaca.
López Obrador said that they are preparing the Parque del Jaguar, in Tulum, and Nuevo Uxmal, in Yucatán, and the expansion of Calakmul, in Campeche, to add together more than 18,000 hectares.
He said that in the case of Calakmul his government will buy land from an ejido in order to expand the reserve that already exists in that place, for which he stated that at the end of his government there will be 10 new parks and Protected Natural Areas.
“We are promoting natural parks, we are going to promote three protected natural areas in the southeast. One is the Jaguar Park, it is a rescue that is being made of an area of around 3 thousand hectares that even includes the archaeological zone of Tulum. Another natural park is going to be Nuevo Uxmal. It has a land of 2 thousand 600 hectares. It has already been decided that it will be a protected area, trees will be planted, there will be reforestation and there are many animals, native fauna, both in Tulum and in Nuevo Uxmal”, he said.
“They are also going to buy 15,000 hectares from an ejido in Calakmul to expand the reserve in Calakmul. We are working on that. I hope that when my government ends we will leave 10 new parks or reserves.”
The president also proposed the creation of a nature reserve in the border area between Chiapas and Oaxaca. AMLO commented that this proposal has already been made to the governors of both states.
He explained that in the region the communities of Santa María Chimalapa and San Miguel Chimalapa maintain an agrarian conflict, and although the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has already ruled on the territorial limits, the struggle still continues.
For this reason, he pointed out, his government will seek to create a protected natural area in that area, which is equivalent to 500 thousand hectares.
“What we want is to make a proposal to turn that entire strip into a reserve zone that gives work to the residents in the Sembrando Vida program and that at the same time is preserved. We would be talking about a huge reserve and we avoid confrontation and conflict. It is an agreement that we want to carry out. We are talking about jungle, which can be preserved with native flora and fauna. That would be a great project that we could carry out before we finish, ”he said.
