MORE THAN 60 PEOPLE ATTEND A FUNERAL AND BECOME INFECTED WITH CORONAVIRUS: SPAIN

Spain.- More than 60 attendees at a funeral in Vitoria have been infected with the coronavirus pathogen (Covid-19), according to the results of tests conducted at the National Center for Microbiology (CNM).

There are 38 people residing in the Riojan towns of Haro and Casalarreina, and at least 25 others living in the province of Alava.

The authorities have confirmed that the outbreak is at the origin of several contagions of toilets from the hospital of Txagorritxu (Vitoria). This center and that of Santiago, also in the Basque capital, have had cases of another outbreak that has affected at least five toilets. Both centers have together a hundred professionals in quarantine.

Due to this situation, measures such as controlled access to the Haro health center and strengthening the control of home isolation of those affected have been adopted. The Riojan authorities have warned that infected people who do not comply with the measures of home isolation imposed can lead to an economic penalty of up to 600 thousand euros.

The director of the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (Ccaes), Fernando Simón, reported that there are at least 30 recovered and made it clear that the level of alert activated (containment) remains so far in Spain.

One of the quarantined families on the other hand explained to La Rioja:

«We are fine, they bring us food, I think we still have to be about a week and we want to be calm, to spend this time and return to normal life.»

It has not transpired if the investigations of what happened in Vitoria have concluded or if the episode has been caused by a single person or more, although the first data point to a funeral attendant who has been admitted since last Sunday in a Miranda hospital from Ebro.
