A comment by the Secretary of Tourism of Yucatán, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, on social networks led to a confrontation with the prestigious chef Ricardo Muñoz Zurita, who reproached the official for the lack of support for regional gastronomy and her alleged lack of interest in issues of the sector.
It all started when Michelle Fridman wrote on Twitter the notice that Netflix would premiere worldwide the day before yesterday “the Emmy-nominated series Chef’s Table: BBQ”, in which a Yucatecan from Yaxunah, a Yaxcabá police station, appears, which “puts up the name of the Yucatecan and Mexican gastronomy ”.
Muñoz Zurita, of Tabasco origin and awarded in Mexico and abroad, responded that the successes are not isolated or spontaneous and that the work projected in the entertainment platform program represents an effort of years of the Yaxunah cooks promoted since its inception by Yucatecan chef Roberto Solís Azarcoya.
The renowned chef said that the gastronomic movement reflected in the Netflix series would not have been possible without his colleague Roberto Solís and the cook Míriam Peraza Rivero, owner of the Manjar Blanco restaurant, whom he mentioned as part of the group of «forgotten» by the Secretariat of Tourism, ignored in the important gastronomic projects.
He added that Rosalía Chay’s effort is important, but in her group «there are many and they all work evenly.» And immediately she asked: «Why have they never been helped or promoted?»
Muñoz Zurita made it clear that he knows well the work of the Yaxunah cooks – he has even participated in their promotion – and the problems they are going through after the passage of tropical storm «Cristóbal» in Yucatán.
There were more than 20 tweets from Ricardo Muñoz, author of the «Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mexican Gastronomy» and other publications.
