President Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed that he ordered the Armed Forces to release Ovidio Guzmán, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, during the operation that took place on October 17 in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

«I ordered that the operation be stopped and that this alleged criminal be released,» said the president.

During his morning conference, from Morelos, López Obrador explained that he made the decision to suspend the operation to avoid the death of hundreds of innocent people in Culiacán.

«We decided to not put the population at risk so that civilians were not affected, because more than 200 innocent people would lose their lives if the operation were not suspended,» he said.
