TABASCO, CHIAPAS, YUCATAN, CAMPECHE, AND QUINTANA ROO MUST BE PROMOTED AS THE MAYA WORLD

    By Yucatan Times

The head of the Ministry of Tourism of Campeche, Jorge Manos Esparragoza, revealed that Campeche is in talks with the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo so that that all 5 states can focus strongly to tourism and promote the region as tourism of the Mayan World.

All states must look for strategies that serve to attract first local tourism, then regional tourism, to advance to the national one and, for the months of October and November, promote it internationally.

He noted that to have the desired success with the proposal, the entire region needs to be homologated with clean and safe state certifications since it is necessary for tourism of any kind to be sure they will be visiting a state that takes hygiene measures seriously, that follows the health and safety protocols so that travelers can go wherever they want in the region and truly enjoy their experience.

“The region must unite so that tourists can get to know and enjoy the walled city of Campeche, as well as its food; admire a wonder of the world like Chichen Itzá in Yucatan; bathe on the beaches and beauty of Quintana Roo, and get to know the natural, architectural and gastronomic beauties of Tabasco and Chiapas”, Manos Ezparrgoza concluded.

TURKEY’S HAGIA SOPHIA HOLDS FIRST FRIDAY PRAYERS SINCE CONVERSION BACK TO MOSQUE

By Isil Sariyuce, Arwa Damon and Laura Smith-Spark, CNN

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN)Istanbul’s historic Hagia Sophia has reopened for Friday prayers for the first time since a decision was made to turn it back into a mosque after more than 80 years as a museum.

Images on Turkish state television showed crowds of Muslims praying in and around the mosque on Friday morning.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan participated in the Friday prayers, where he recited verses of the Quran.

Some people came from outside Istanbul and spent the night around Hagia Sophia waiting for the prayer, according to CNN Turk.

Only 500 people were invited inside the building because of coronavirus restrictions, according to Turkey’s religious affairs director Ali Erbas. Thousands more prayed in the garden and in Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul’s old city.

Erdogan later visited the Fatih Mosque, where he visited the tomb of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, or Mehmed the Conqueror, who conquered what was then Constantinople in 1453. The city was renamed Istanbul.

The Hagia Sophia was the Roman Empire’s first Christian cathedral and is among the best-known Byzantine structures in the world. It switched from a Greek Orthodox cathedral to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453.

The historic site then became a museum in 1935 as part of a decree by modern Turkey’s secularist founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Speaking at Fatih Mosque, Erdogan said Hagia Sophia had returned to its «original» use. «Hopefully it will serve as a mosque until eternity. It is the cultural heritage of all humanity that everybody can come and visit,» he said.

Erdogan ordered the conversion of the historic monument on July 10 after a court annulled a 1934 presidential decree that made it a museum.

The decision, involving one of the city’s most important landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been criticized by international religious and political leaders, with UN cultural agency UNESCO among those voicing concern.

However, the move has not prompted wide opposition within Turkey.

The Turkish government has tried to reassure skeptics that the building’s Christian artworks and frescoes will not be touched, with technology instead being used to conceal them during Friday prayers.

Erdogan has positioned himself as a friend of conservative Islamists in Turkey, moving the country further from its secularist roots.

UNESCO said earlier this month that it deeply regretted Turkey’s decision and that the choice was made without the organization receiving prior notification.

Pope Francis said he was «very saddened» by the building’s conversion. Greece’s culture minister, meanwhile, decried the move as «an open provocation to the entire civilized world.»

Turkish officials have emphasized that when it is not being used as a mosque, the Hagia Sophia — which is popular with tourists visiting Istanbul — will be open to all to visit free of charge, according to state-run news agency Anadolu.

Erdogan used a televised speech on July 10 to urge people to respect the decision to convert the building back to a mosque.

«Like all our mosques, its doors will be open to everyone — Muslim or non-Muslim. As the world’s common heritage, Hagia Sophia with its new status will keep on embracing everyone in a more sincere way,» he said.

«We will be treating every opinion voiced on the international stage with respect. But the way Hagia Sophia will be used falls under Turkey’s sovereign rights. We deem every move that goes beyond voicing an opinion a violation of our sovereignty.»

  • DISNEY DELAYS ‘MULAN’ INDEFINITELY, STAR WARS AND AVATAR MOVIES PUSHED BACK A YEAR

DISNEY DELAYS ‘MULAN’ INDEFINITELY, STAR WARS AND AVATAR MOVIES PUSHED BACK A YEAR

    KEY POINTS

    • “Mulan” is no longer being released on Aug. 21 and is now “unset” on Disney’s calendar.
    • All dated Star Wars films and Avatar sequels have been pushed back one year on the calendar.
    • The company said that theater closures and production shutdowns during the global coronavirus pandemic caused it to make a number of adjustments to its slate.

Disney is making some major changes to its release calendar that include delaying “Mulan” from its Aug. 21 release indefinitely and pushing back the debuts of future Star Wars and Avatar movies by a year.

On Thursday, the company said that theater closures and production shutdowns during the global coronavirus pandemic caused it to make a number of adjustments to its slate.

“Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for ‘Mulan’ as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world,” a Walt Disney Studios spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.

Disney shares fell slightly in after-hours trading and were down nearly 1%.

“Mulan” is currently listed as unset, meaning its release is delayed indefinitely. This is the fourth time that the live-action film has been delayed since March.

With “Mulan” vacating its August release date, there are now no Hollywood blockbuster releases set for the month. “Tenet” moved out from its August debut on Monday and has yet to announce a new release date. AT&T CEO John Stankey has promised movie theater owners that Christopher Nolan’s spy thriller will have a theatrical release.

“New Mutants” a 20th Century Fox feature in the X-Men franchise that has been delayed for the last three years, appears to still be on the calendar for Aug. 28, but depending on if movie theaters reopen next month, the film could be pushed again or be delegated to a video on-demand release.

A number of smaller, independent features are set for release in theaters. However, major theater chains like AMC may not be open to show them. Earlier Thursday, AMC announced that it has pushed back its reopening plans to mid-August after “Tenet” left the calendar. It is unclear how it will react to “Mulan” leaving as well.

AMC, like other major movie theater chains, has been closed since mid-March, awaiting a slowdown in coronavirus cases and new content from Hollywood. AMC, in particular, had been very vocal about how the pandemic could push it into bankruptcy.

Earlier this month, the exhibitor was able to reach a debt agreement that should help it remain solvent through 2021.

“Theaters will again be forced to reassess their target opening dates,” Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com, said. “Archival titles can only get the market so far while the summer weather is conducive to the current drive-in boom. Studios need theaters to be open, and theaters need studios to release new product. Anytime one side of that equation budges, the other has little choice but to follow suit in this current world of uncertainty.”

    Additional slate changes include:

    • “The Personal History of David Copperfield” moving to Aug. 28
    • “Death on the Nile” is now debuting on Oct. 23
    • “The Empty Man” will arrive on Dec. 4
    • “The French Dispatch” is unset
    • “Antlers” is now dated Feb. 19, 2021
    • “The Last Duel” will arrive Oct. 15, 2021
    • An untitled Disney Live Action film will take the place of “Avatar 2” on Dec. 16, 2021.
    • “Avatar 2” pushed to Dec. 16, 2022
    • Untitled Star Wars moved to Dec. 22, 2023
    • “Avatar 3” now dated Dec. 20, 2024
    • Untitled Star Wars redated to Dec. 19, 2025
    • “Avatar 4” will arrive Dec. 18, 2026
    • Untitled Star Wars moved to Dec. 17, 2027
    • “Avatar 5” now slated for Dec. 22, 2028
  • DODGERS ACE KERSHAW OUT WITH BACK ISSUE, WAS STARTING OPENER

DODGERS ACE KERSHAW OUT WITH BACK ISSUE, WAS STARTING OPENER

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw went on the injured list because of a back issue hours before he was scheduled to start Thursday night for Los Angeles against the San Francisco Giants on opening day of the shortened season.

Manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw’s back stiffened up in a weight room workout two days ago. He’s been receiving treatment ever since, but the training staff advised against the 32-year-old three-time NL Cy Young Award winner making his ninth opening day start.

“He’s as prepared a player as I’ve ever been around and starting an opening day means a lot to him,” Roberts said. “For him to not get to experience it for the ninth time, I just feel for him.”

Roberts said that while there is no set timetable for Kershaw’s return, he could be available during the Dodgers’ series at Arizona from July 30-Aug. 2.

Kershaw was replaced by 22-year-old right-hander Dustin May, who will become the first Dodgers rookie to start on opening day since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.

“He’s very unflappable. He’s a very confident young man,” Roberts said. “He’s got obviously really good stuff, so when a change of plans happens, Dustin adjusts very well.”

Kershaw has been bothered by back problems in the past. He was on the IL in 2016, 2017 and 2018, each time with various issues.

The left-hander had a 3.30 ERA last season, his highest since his rookie year in 2008.

May was recalled Thursday after being optioned to the team’s remote training location. He had been set to throw a simulated game a day earlier, but it didn’t happen.

May had a 3.63 ERA in 14 appearances, including four starts, last season with the team.

TWO TOURIST VESSELS, TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WAYS OF MANAGING THE PANDEMIC

(CNN) — The Canada/United States border is expected to remain closed until at least August 21, but there’s one region where American and Canadian tourists can still pass almost side by side, and that’s Niagara Falls.

Recent footage of tour boats at the world-famous waterfalls show a people-laden vessel operated by US company Maid of the Mist sailing past a sparsely populated boat run by Canada’s Hornblower Niagara Cruises.

The US boats are being filled to 50% capacity, but the Canadian boats are taking a much more cautious approach, operating at about 15% capacity.

«You can see why the pandemic is raging in the States but not in Canada when you look at the difference between the boats,» one Canadian tourist told reporters.

«The Maid of the Mist is following the guidance of New York State health officials,» says the US tour company. «With the safety of our guests and employees in mind, we have implemented a number of changes to our operation to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.»

Face masks are mandatory and social distancing markers have been added to the American tour boats.

Out of a population of around 37.6 million, Canada has reported nearly 114,000 cases since the start of the pandemic.

The United States, meanwhile, is home to around 328 million people, and has reported nearly four million Covid-19 cases as of July 22.

The Canadian/US border is the longest undefended border in the world and, due to Covid-19, it’s been closed to all «non-essential traffic» since March. The US and Canadian governments review the agreement every 30 days.

«We recognize that the situation continues to be complex in the United States with regard to Covid-19,» Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters this month. «We are going to continue to keep Canadians safe and to keep our economy flowing.»

  • FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 30 YEARS, WALMART WILL BE CLOSED ON THANKSGIVING

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 30 YEARS, WALMART WILL BE CLOSED ON THANKSGIVING

“We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up. We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones,” Walmart said.

    By Ben Popken

For the first time in 30 years, Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, will be closed on Thanksgiving, the company announced this week, saying it wants to give a break to essential staff who have been working during the pandemic.

“We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up. We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones,” John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S, said in a statement.

Thanksgiving shoppers will need to plan ahead, or do their last-minute purchasing elsewhere. And shoppers used to getting a jump-start on gift purchasing after the big meal will have to use other options.

Online sales, which have increased annually during the holiday period, may see a further spike this year as some shoppers avoid crowds in order to better social distance and retailers increase their investments in online deals and technology.

Walmart said it would release information about its store hours for the Friday after Thanksgiving — otherwise known as Black Friday — at a later date.

It remains to be seen how many other retailers will follow suit. For years, Walmart led the way in opening earlier and earlier on Black Friday. Some stores even opened at midnight. Others, including Walmart, were also open for holiday shopping on Thanksgiving Day itself.

“We had an arms race and the leader in the arms race just stepped back,” said Charlie O’Shea, Walmart analyst for Moody’s.

In recent years, retailers have started stretching out their Black Friday deals and the day itself is less significant.

“Black Friday sales tend to run all week now anyway. And then you have Cyber Monday. Plenty of time to get good deals!” Ashley MacPhee, a long-term care health care worker, told NBC News in an online message.

Home Depot, Kmart, Kohl’s, Kroger, Macy’s, and Toys R Us did not respond to an NBC News request for comment.

Spokespersons for Best Buy and Target said there were no details to share yet. An Office Depot spokesman said the store would be closed Thanksgiving but hadn’t finalized all of its holiday plans. Costco and Lowe’s spokespersons said their stores are always closed on Thanksgiving.

Retailers have had their usual shopping calendars and supply chains scrambled by the coronavirus. Asian suppliers typically begin shipping for the U.S. holiday season in May and June, but retailers stocked up last year as tariff increases escalated. Amazon also hasn’t released a date yet for its annual Prime Day sales, which have taken place in the middle of July.

“While Walmart has taken a very proactive approach, other retailers and shopping center operators will probably wait to see how the virus and resulting government actions will continue to impact in-store traffic before making final decisions,” said Brian Field, Senior Director at ShopperTrak, which monitors consumer foot traffic in stores.

In-store retail foot traffic is down 37 percent year over year for the weeks of July 10-18, according to the firm’s latest data. That’s significantly improved from an 80 percent decrease in April as measured cases first soared, but only slightly improved from one month ago, where it was down 41 percent.

Which stores will be open or not should be clearer after Labor Day, said Field.

Most shoppers were understanding and supportive of Walmart’s move. They said they were grateful for the hard work that essential workers such as supermarket clerks and stockers have been doing during the pandemic at personal risk, and the employees deserve a break.

“The stores in our area have had many workers get sick over the last several months and the stores were closed for deep cleaning,” said Jocelyn, a mother of four from Massachusetts, who asked that her last name be withheld for privacy reasons.

“I think it’s the least they could do for these essential workers,” she said.

  • LAST QANTAS 747 FLIGHT DRAWS ICONIC KANGAROO IN THE SKY ON ITS FINAL JOURNEY FROM AUSTRALIA

LAST QANTAS 747 FLIGHT DRAWS ICONIC KANGAROO IN THE SKY ON ITS FINAL JOURNEY FROM AUSTRALIA

Amanda Jackson and Sharif Paget, CNN

(CNN) — After 50 years of flying, Qantas’ last remaining Boeing 747 passenger jet departed Australia for the final time on Wednesday and left a special message for everyone in the sky — a drawing of the airline’s iconic kangaroo logo.

Last Qantas 747 flight draws iconic kangaroo in the sky - The Live ...

The flight path of Flight QF7474 traced the logo in the sky after it took off from Sydney Airport for the US, where the jumbo jet will be retired, Qantas, Australia’s biggest airline, said in a statement on Wednesday.

«This aircraft was well ahead of its time and extremely capable,» said Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce in a statement. «Engineers and cabin crew loved working on them and pilots loved flying them. So did passengers. They have carved out a very special place in aviation history and I know they’ll be greatly missed by a lot of people, including me.»

The 747 is being replaced by more fuel-efficient aircraft with better range, like the 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350, according to Joyce. While the fleet was set to be retired this year, Qantas said the pandemic decimated travel globally, which moved up the retirement by six months.

The travel industry has taken a huge hit as countries have gone on lockdown and limited traveling to curb the spread of Covid-19. Earlier this month, British Airways retired its fleet of 747s four years ahead of schedule because of the pandemic.

    Bidding farewell

People gathered at Sydney Airport to bid farewell to the plane, which received a water salute before departure. The plane was loaded with cargo bound for Los Angeles before the aircraft goes into storage at a boneyard in the Mojave Desert, according to the Qantas press release.

Joyce said it is hard to overstate the impact the 747 had for a country like Australia. The aircraft’s size helped lower airfares for a nation that is far away as Australia.

The 747 «put international travel within reach of the average Australian and people jumped at the opportunity,» Joyce said.

The flight was commanded by Capt. Sharelle Quinn, the airline’s first female captain.

«I have flown this aircraft for 36 years and it has been an absolute privilege,» Quinn said in the press release.

Quinn said 747s have carried more than 250 million passengers for Qantas, including a number of rescue missions for Qantas over the past 50 years. The plane brought home a record 674 passengers out of Darwin following Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and flew medical supplies in and tourists home from the Maldives and Sri Lanka following the massive tsunami in December 2004.

Most recently, it was used in February to bring hundreds of stranded Australians home from Wuhan, China, where the novel coronavirus pandemic began.

Qantas took delivery of its first 747 in August 1971, the same year the first McDonalds opened in Australia, according to the airline.

«It has been a wonderful part of our history, a truly ground-breaking aircraft and while we are sad to see our last one go, it’s time to hand over to the next generation of aircraft that are a lot more efficient,» Quinn said.

Before heading out over the Pacific Ocean, Qantas said that the flight was scheduled to flyby Sydney Harbor and the HARS Museum where it will dip the wings in a final farewell to Qantas’ first 747-400, which is on display there.
