10 YEARS OF THE REGISTRATION OF CALAKMUL AS A MIXED PROPERTY

-Calakmul is the largest tropical rainforest natural reserve in Mexico and the second in America, after the Amazon

Within the framework of the tenth anniversary of the inscription of the Ancient Mayan City and Protected Tropical Forests of Calakmul as a Mixed Property on the UNESCO World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee, during the thirty-eighth session held in Doha (Qatar) in 2014; The general director of the Cultural Heritage Authority of the State of Campeche (APCEC), Rosa del Carmen Olvera Salinas, made an appeal to continue with the preservation of this important region for the state.

The area inscribed on the UNESCO list, which is located in the southern part of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, is considered the second largest area of ​​tropical forests in America and the best preserved in the region with a total of 723 thousand hectares.

It should be noted that the Ancient Mayan City and protected Tropical Forests of Calakmul was the first Mexican Mixed Property inscribed on the UNESCO list, after it was cataloged in 1989 as a Biosphere Reserve and, in 2002, Cultural Heritage of our country.

The declaration of a mixed site was the first for Mexico, the fourth in America and the thirtieth in the world.
